I forget where I found the link to it, I went with WinDV. It's small and works, it will automatically name each avi with a serial number. It seems to drop frames a bit more than I remember Roxio do, but these are jerky home movies anyway, so that doesn't bother me.

I still have a JVC BR-HD50 deck which can handle MiniDV, DVCam, small or large tapes and HDV 720p, of which I still have a lot of tapes from the HD101 (which I still have). It has HDMI out and serial deck control so I capture through the BMD Ultrastudio to DNxHD directly in Avid MC. The deck upscales better than software and has error correction unlike firewire direct capture (which I don't have any longer). Both the deck and cam are like new after 15 years, they lasted well - a sparingly used head cleaning tape helps too. You can pick the deck up second hand for very little money now and apart from 1080i HDV it's pretty universal. I only ever used Sony DVcam tapes and they have lasted well too.

DV records the signal in a digital format.This way, tape noise is no issue any more. Time base errors arecompletely corrected by a digital buffer.The best thing is that the digital signal can directly be transferredto a computer by a simple serial interface, can be cut and pastedwithout re-encoding (except when effects are applied), and thenbe rewritten to tape without the slightest quality loss.
